's listen to mitt romney talking about abortion. >> do you intend to pursue legislation specifically regarding abortion? >> there is no legislation regarding abortion that i'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda. >> now the democrats have seized on this, you can't really blame them, because his position on abortion does change, according to the strength. he was very much in favor of pro choice, governor of massachusetts, now he is in favor of pro life. but he always as a pro lifer said we need to revert to roe v wade, people say he says what suits him, depending on whether he is appealing to the hard right of the party, or as he is now, according to bill clinton, mr. moderate mitt, that we haven't seen it for a few months. >> well, first of all, i couldn't hear it very well, i assume it is referring to the des moines register. but are there piles of legislation sitting in congress that he is going to point to? the des moines register editorial board? the fact is, he is and has always been committed to being a pro-life president. he is committed to the fact that he will

at 11:20 today. we want to know what you think these candidates should talk about, or what mitt romney should specifically address in his speech and what foreign- policy issues you think he needs to talk about more on the campaign trail. already getting reaction from facebook this morning. host: just below that, eleanor rights -- host: we want to get to your calls this morning, start calling in now. we have -- we will read to you a few more articles from this speech. "mitt romney strives to stand apart in global policy." host: again, that speech is happening at about 11:20 this morning. we will take our first call on this from clinton, illinois. matt is waiting on the independent line. good morning. caller: mitt romney needs to go after the whole libya at incident. he may have made a few missteps regarding coming out with information, but he needs to layoff of that, because it is one thing that he can actually use. i do not know if it will help his foreign policy, because obama can just come back and say -- that is what i did -- but that is something he will really have to focus on if

failed -- >> tara that was an excellent shift but answer for me about governor romney. we can talk about the president. >> that is my answer. >> no, that is my answer, soledad. >> the answer is that the president -- -- the answer about president obama? >> i think the governor has made his position clear relative to where we stand with israel. >> he hasn't is my point. >> decided to meet with entertainment folks and people like that, rather than benjamin netanyahu and i think that there -- again, there's a clear position here -- >> it's not. it's not. that's my point. my point, tara, hold on. just hold on. my point is, it's completely contradictory. my question is, which is it? >> in your viewpoint. >> okay. then tell me how it's not completely contradictory in your viewpoint, but don't talk about president obama at this moment, answer the question about governor romney. >> we will stand side by side with -- we will stand side by side with israel and -- and -- and the governor has made that clear. i'm not going to get into a big foreign policy debate with you here. that's not -- that's no

, the senior communications adviser for the romney campaign. nice to see you. thanks for talking with us. >> hi, soledad. good morning. absolutely. >> so we know having read some of these excerpts that have been sent out by the campaign that governor romney's going to focus on israel, he's going to focus on the palestinian territories and no big surprise, he's going to focus on iran. why don't you spell out for me exactly what governor romney's position is when it comes to iran? >> well, listen, governor romney is going to clearly spell out the choice that there is this election, particularly when it comes to foreign policy and all of the unrest that is happening in the middle east right now and how we have to address that and that is working with our allies, that is calling terrorism terrorism when we see it, that is acting boldly and strongly with leadership and that's what americans want to see and hear. i think we'll have an opportunity to see that in the speech. i don't want to give out the whole speech. i think that americans will have the opportunity to hear that and see that. but i thin

governor romney talking about the need to do that. i think also he will talk about having a fair approach that actually applies the laws that we have on the commonwealth of virginia but across the country. one of the things that we see with the border incidents i think most people want us to have a clear policy that we are working with the states not against the states to try to get that enforced. i think if governor romney does is that i think he will do well across the board with voters in virginia. >> geraldo: did you, kristine, enjoy the debate? >> i had a blast watching the debate. it was a lot of fun. >> geraldo: where did you watch t? at the pub or in church where did you watch it? >> i was actually with me family sitting on the couch. high-fiving everybody. >> geraldo: what did you think was the strongest moment, the governor's? >>> ry moment was strong from the way he walked out exuding leadership and confidence and he would not let president obama get away with this misinformation. there is a saying a lie runs around the world while the truth is still lacing up his sneakers. tha

, that's the proposal that mitt romney laid out. we can talk about the math specifically. i brought you the different pieces of his tax plan that he listed. >> i like your version, all scribbled in a sharpie there, huh? >> we don't have the sharp graphics here at the campaign that you guys showed at cnn. but the fact is, in a debate in february, on your network, mitt romney said that all americans are going to get a 20% across the board tax cut, including the top 1%. it was like going on an episode of "oprah's favorite things," except instead of getting a car if you were one of the wealthiest americans, you were going to get that 20% across the board tax cut. even on the program a little bit ago, he wouldn't specify how he's going to pay for it. he won't specify those deductions. so we can't put him on this chart until he specifies how he's going to pay for that plan. >> all right. but to be fair, he has made it clear that his tax policy is for a 20% cut and elimination of deductions and loopholes. you're right, he hasn't said which ones, but it is very clear that his tax proposal inclu

watching the debate last week with a group of undecided voters in colorado. when romney talked about not raising taxes on the middle class, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. they had these stylus things, and they shot it off the chart. it earned him one of the highest marks of the night from that focus group. so this fight of the middle class comes at a time when the president is on the defensive and lost some ground in key areas. cnn orc poll tonight shows the president's lead is half a point outside the margin of error. last month he was leading with nine points. we told you last night about a pew poll which shows romney leading obama. you can see also barely outside the margin of error. in that same poll, the president's 18-point lead among women disappeared. he's now running even with romney. so who is winning this vital war over middle class tax cuts? rah ham salon joins us and john avlon, senior political columnist at "newsweek" and "the daily beast." this debate over $5 trillion and what you're trying to do and on the backs of the middle class, this isn't just about a

for more action going after romney/ryan on the 47%. >> these are the folks who talk about 47% of the american people being unwilling to take responsibility. it's about time governor romney takes some responsibility. >> biden had the crowd fired up after a debate performance many wish the president had given. one in which he outlined a blistering attack on his opponents, delivering a flurry of punches from the opening bell. >> romney said, no, let detroit go bankrupt. we moved in and helped people refinance their homes. governor romney said, no, let foreclosures hit the bottom. but it shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own lives. my friend recently in a speech in washington said 30% of the american people are takers. these people are my mom and dad, the people i grew up with, my neighbors. they pay more effective tax than governor romney pays in his federal income tax. >> indeed. biden's performance was so impressive, the other party was forced to admit that they had taken a hiding. with even mit

into a woman, who said you know i really like romney when he talks about business because i am a small businesswoman but i really like obama when he talks about women's issues and i wonder if her -- she is sitti at home watching this debate tonight in lakewood, colorado changed her mind or whether it formed her thinking or help her make it up, i don't think it did. >> rose: chuck? >> well i would just say, in baseball terms, because it might be possible the yankees orioles game may be out of the corner of my eye in the middle of a series. >> and exactly, but think of think way, so game one, romney won, game two, had, had ryan won this debate decisively and there is no way to look at it the polls are split on this, some polls give it to biden, on substance abide den controlled this debate, a debate coach may say. >> it was important to the biden campaign hot to lose this debate, a draw, even split, whatever you want, however you want to look at it, it was about getting to the next presidential debate while not keeping -- while sort of lifting up the base a little bit and i think on that

closeup when romney didn't talk about women at all and when they obsessed over it in the convention to me that was a sign that women like all other voters are really judging on the most important and central issue in this campaign, and that is the economy, when romney was more credible on that and gained with everyone including women. >> rose: chuck todd, will fact checkers tomorrow morning look at this and examine this and find out and suggest that somebody was either misleading or, quote, lying? >> i don't think there are any lies in there, my favorite part is when, you know, there is that one point where you have joe biden saying 97 percent of small businesses make $250,000 or less and paul ryan insisting 1 million businesses are affected by that and that is they are both ride but, right but want to use different numbers one wants to use raw data and the other percentage to make it look large and make themselves look right i want to point out on abortion, i thought what was amazing with that question about the catholic faith and martha raddatz put it is if it is possible for both of th

the speech today. romney talked about the need for new leadership and bold leadership to bring a resolution to the israel/palestine situation. when the cameras were not rolling a few months ago when millions weren't listening or watching, romney had a different take on the exact same subject. i'd like to play that right now. >> these are problems that are very hard to solve. i look at the policy for political purposes committed to the destruction and elimination of israel, and he's throwing the issues. i say there's just to way. what you do is you move things along the best wake you can, you hope for a degree of stability but you recognize it's going to remain unsolved. >> so i'm sorry. it gets hard to take this stuff seriously at a certain point with when the guy gives a major foreign policy speech and bash obama for not bringing resolution to this program as president when he has gone in front of a group of people and basically said the best you could do as president is kick the can down the road. i have a hard time taking that seriously. >> unfortunately, he can't say that in the speech.

this in massachusetts. if you talk to democrats in massachusetts, they say romney was a very good governor, that they could work with him. maybe obama saw this because the significance of the last 3 1/2 years in the obama presidency is there was never cooperation or rarely cooperation. no or very few bipartisan agreements. the only time they did something was when they brought joe biden in to negotiate with the republicans. so maybe obama sensed that. but i don't know -- it's worthy to investigate. >> sean: yeah. one theory i have, i want to ask you one more question about your theory. i would argue, $6 trilon in debt, very hard to explain away. i would argue that, you know when 2012 economically is worse than 2011, which was worse than 2010, unemployment in 2012, fewer jobs in this year than last year and the year before. things are trending down. obviously, that's troubling for the president in terms of trying to defend it. but back to your theory, if he was so bad that there something else going on, that could be troubling in and of itself. you know, we need presidents that are strong.

talked about this on sunday. i want to actual, we made a case that could be decisive because romney was so far down in the public image. more importantly, you know, sean, all of those numbers are very close. you can't say this -- the numbers have changed from what they were. there is more coming, potentially. more importantly, debates affect how you view the race and the candidate. romney's favorability has soared. he was upside down in favorability. even in the cbs poll, right after the post-pam of uncommitted voters, he went from 30% believing he cared about people to almost 53%, almost doubled it in 90 minutes. that's the movement that we care about. >> sean: listen, nobody's doubting -- i can -- with certainty say obama's going to show up. he's going to be aggressive. he is probably likely to over -- you know, go overboard. >> here's the obama narrative, simply, sean. fiattack governor romney as his campaign has, he drives up his negative and that improves his vote share. what his handlers are saying, you missed opportunity after opportunity to position governor romney as being

to start out by saying i think if you talk to political professionals in both parties they don't see the electoral map that auspicious for romney is that real clear politics map with the states shifted. if you look at the real clear map only with no tossup states, where they push all the states where somebody has an advantage, obama is in a much stronger position, and we saw from our polls today that milt romney is trailing by six points in the state of ohio where he must win. but the test tonight for paul ryan is to try, us a mention, to accelerate the momentum that romney gained last week and try to prevent joe biden from coming out very aggressively and saying, hey, wait a minute. president obama may not have said it, but i'm going to say it tonight. there are contradictions between the romney who was on stage in denver, the romney record. joe biden is an experienced debater. he sometimes makes mistakes verbally. we'll see how he handles that, and paul ryan is young. there's a very large age gap between these two, but he is somebody who is very fluent in policy, as you know. an in

the summer, carol, he talked about that foreign policy trip overseas. mitt romney was strongly criticized by some in the palestinian community after he basically said that the reason why the palestinian territory there is not doing very well is because of cultural differences with israel. there is one excerpt from the speech we want to show to you. this is basically where mitt romney is going to be going with this speech later on this morning. he is going to say, quote, we cannot support our friends and defeat our enemies in t middle east when our words are not backed by deeds, when our defense spending is being arbitrarily and deeply cut, when we have no trade agenda to speak of and the perception of our strategy is not one of partnership, but of passivity. it is time to change course in the middle east. one final thing, carol, on a campaign conference call yesterday romney's foreign policy team talked about some presidents of past they might be shaping their foreign policy principles after. they talked about the presidencies of jfk, truman and even bill clinton. after that first debate

want to talk a little bit about this speech today. thank you for joining us. what does mitt romney have to do in this speech? what sort of expectations are built up? guest: this will be romney's foreign-policy speech. it is clearly pretty late in the game for him to be delivering a speech like this. early voting has started in the number of states. he wants to continue some of the momentum he built up last week's debate. it's a chance for him to make a clear contrast between himself and the president. more importantly, it's another chance for his campaign to show that there is more of a choice between him and obama and less of a referendum. when romney pick his running mate this summer, there was a sense that this would be a chance for him to outline things for his own and have a policy position that would set him apart from the president. but we've seen over the past couple of weeks at the campaign dynamic has not changed that much. this is just one more issue on which the republicans are trying to get the president. >> what you have seen from the speech so far, is mitt romney going to

mitt romney rather than talking about his own record. and biden's weird performance was kind of a piece of that technique that they have adopted. i think voters are looking for something deeper from the president now. the burden is on him to show it next week. >> no hint of a second term agenda in biden's -- >> no, not at all. i think he showed president obama that you can be aggressive, you can defend. >> so romney ought to be on notice, he's coming at you? >> right. >> but he also showed us how not to be aggressive at the same time. and one of the dangers is, i got the impression from the last presidential debate that romney was holding back a little bit. that he was really -- >> really? >> that he was a little nice, he left a few zingers on the table because he was dominating. >> but obama is such a cooler customer than biden. biden is all heat and energy and attack. obama is laid-back. i mean, can he really go on the attack like biden? >> i think he can, but i think the danger is he opens the door for romney to be more aggressive in his responses, and i think gov. romney will be mor

some of that talking about abortion and saying there's no difference between him and mitt romney now. >> it's interesting. you say problems with the facts here. already you've got ann romney's latest comments and paul ryan yesterday basically make the assertion that either calling out quote/unquote lies as the president and supporters referred to comments made by ryan during his big speech at the rnc and comments of mitt romney as either unsportsmanlike or in ryan's case, a way to demoralize people because you have no other default argument here. they're trying to counter this. >> right. >> i think we have been challenged on this, as well. you know this. there's a difference between someone's opinion and whether or not someone says a factory closed when it was not. that is not up for opinion. >> right. well, look. this election is the sky's green collection. we have little leverage it feels like to try to set the record straight as fairly as possible and we try to do and everybody's got their own study. everybody's got their own set of facts this time around and, you know, frustratin

in the battleground states. you know, we -- i have been to michigan several times. we talked about can governor romney put pennsylvania into play. both of these states were out of reach, michigan and pennsylvania heading into the first debate. look where they are now. dead heat statistically in the state of michigan, where romney was born. his dad was governor. in pennsylvania, a close race as well with the president oh top. i'm a bit skeptical. i want to see if this happens in a second and third poll but this is vy important. states like this suddenly being in play heading into the final couple of weeks because if the president has to start spending time and money defending pennsylvania and defending michigan, that means less time the president is spending in florida, in ohio, in the western battlegrounds. at the moment the map is expanding, finally the romney campaign would say in its favor. >> interesting. john, thanks. >>> let's dig deeper. let's look forward to round three of the debates on tuesday, where the campaign is headed. joined by patrick millsaps, former chief of staff and paul begala. t

want to talk about, in the middle of the crisis, governor romney talked about apologies from the obama administration. was that appropriate in the middle of the crisis? >> on that same day, the obama administration was in that same position. they disavowed their own statement they put up earlier in the day in cairo. it is never too early to speak out for our values. we should have spoken out right away. we should always stand up for peace, democracy, individual rights. we should not be imposing these devastating defense cuts. when we equivocate on our values, it make us look weak. when we look weak, our adversaries are much more willing to test us. >> that is a bunch of malarkey. this lecture on embassy security. the congressman cut embassy security in his budget by $300 million below what we asked for. so much for the embassy security. governor romney, before he knew the facts, before he knew that the ambassador was killed, he was out making political statements. he was panned by the media around the world. this talk about this weakness, i do not understand what my friend is talking a

talked about the polls and mitt romney on the move. mitt romney spent 90 minutes on the stage lying about everything he claimed to stand for prior to the debate. he lied about his tax plan, he lied about his health care plan, he lied about medicare and medicaid and social security, he lied about deregulation, he lied about jobs, he lied about education. think about this. after campaigning for 18 months on a tax plan for the job creators there that will reduce their taxes 20% on personal income, cut capital gains taxes and business taxes, romney stood on stage with president obama and denied all of that. he told the american people that he really didn't have a plan, which my friends, is completely a 180. after saying it, every campaign stop for 18 months that he would repeal obama care on day one, he stood before the american people and said his plan would take care of preexisting conditions. after the debate, his campaign admitted it would not. romney says his health care plan, which passed in massachusetts, would be good for states. but somehow when president obama passed the same plan d

that obama missed going after the missing details of romney's plans, the context he didn't want to talk about the plans and seen paul ryan think of the issue of how to pay for the tax cut plan. paul ryan's been asked the time a few times and interviews on fox and you would think of as friendly territory. he said i don't know. he said i don't have enough time to get in to the numbers on this. i totally expect biden to come after ryan on that aggressively. i think the thought is, though, republicans had a long time. the ryan campaign and romney campaign knows this is coming and looking at romney's performance, it was glib, superficially appealing. he was able to dance around not providing details so i don't know exactly how they do it. i just -- i have a kind of hunch that, you know, they'll find something that paul ryan can say that will, you know, that will get around the criticism that biden's going to come in with. >> on the lowering expectations front, the president came out said and he thinks joe biden is going to be terrific. surprisingly, they're not lowering expectations and i think tr

with that. can you discern what romney was talking about when he said biden contradicted that sworn testimony? >> well, i would say number one that is probably a reference to eric nordstrom, who was the regional security officer, that means he works for the state department. the diplomatic security side of that. and he -- in sworn testimony he did say that he had asked for more security assistance, more personnel, and that he was refuse refused. you have to get into the subchapters on this. there were requests he made that were verbal. there were requests that were not necessarily formal bureaucratic stamped type of things. so i think we have to really get down into the weeds to say was it a formal request that was turned down, was it a less formal, verbal one et cetera. on the other side, that we that you were talking about, what he's saying is, look, this is handled, the personnel issues are handled by the state department. that type of detail doesn't come to us here at the white house. at least that's what the white house is saying. >> two things going on there. let me throw anot
